Day 2: Berkeley Botanical Garden
Back to Home Page.
On our second day, we decided to take mom to a Giant's baseball game.  We bought matching shirts to help us get into the spirit.  Before the game though, we took a trip up to the Berkeley Botanical Gardens.  It's a wonderful place to see native plants from all over the world, in one convenient place!
It was a foggy day up in the Berkeley Hills at the gardens, though evidently Karen was seeing the sun!
Mom and Karen pose for a picture with some of the gardens behind them!
Melody and Karen in the gardens.  You can tell that Melody came prepared for the cooler weather in San Francisco.  She layered up!
As we walked through the many different garden areas, we would try to find our favorite flower or plant and take a picture to document that plant.  This one we liked because it was a bluey-purple color.  Our favorites!
This flower was stunning with it's bright red color and yellowy center.  It was really different from most red colored flowers!
We liked these flowers because even the stems were red!  The petals were tube shaped and pointed down as they grew.
Very unique!
These flowers had a beehive shaped top with the colored leaves growing out of the bottom.  The pink was especially pretty!
One of the hidden features is a small stream that winds through the garden and is home to the water plants.  Here a small drop-off creates a waterfall that keeps the water moving down the hill!
Mom wanted to get us some plants to help us remember her and our visit to the gardens.  This is a carnivorous plant.  While it doesn't actually eat flies, they do get trapped inside the cylinders of the leaves.
Instant fly trap!  Doesn't it look cool?
This was one of the unique plants in the Asian garden.  Their sail-like petals only grew on one side of the flower!
Very interesting!
This is a catcus in the desert garden.  It was very tall and really growing well for a plant that should like the dry, hot heat instead of the moist, cooler gardens.
