Description of Submission: "The first piece is inspired from a photograph from the 19th century, here a white settler and a native American man pose for an official marriage portrait, many themes and issues come up, first gay marriage, it's not as new an issue as we all might think, we cannot imagine what these two men might have gone through to be able to express their devotion.  The second issue is interracial relationships and marriage, while it was common for white trappers and settlers to take Native American brides, such a union still would have been looked down upon.  The couple represents ultimate defiance and ultimate love." - Asa

Why Karen and Melody Liked It: We loved that it was able to depict gay marriage in the time of the Native American and white settlers.
There was a lot of detail work to it as well.
Past Winner: Asa Benally was also a previous winner in the 2004 Honorable Mention "Best Drawing".  Click here to see her drawing here "Happy Endings".
