Salt Lake City
- Elk Farm
Back to Home Page.
On Sunday, we took a nice road trip up north of Salt Lake City where they have an  Elk preserve.  Every year the Elk come to get fed so they can survive the long, cold winters.   We got to ride an open sleigh through the lounging elk.
Kim and Karen pose with a "deer" friend.  Okay, it's really an elk and he isn't a friend to either of us.  But he does look cool, don't you think?
The drive up to the Elk Preserve was mostly highway, but aftet the turn-off you drive snow-packed roads.  Here is some beautiful water from a stream that flows right beside the road.  Hope it doesn't flood!
Melody really loved seeing the elk.  I mean she "really" loved them.
No, she not really kissing him.  Know Melody she is just giving him a piece of her mind about having to drive out so far to see him!
This is the elk feeding station.  The elk are free to wander around the preserve and the nearby mountains.  No one makes them come, or prevents them from going.  They come when they know it's time to eat and they stay until the weather is good enough for them to go forage on their own.
I have no idea who this guy is, or why we have his picture.  But for the sake of the website, I will say that he probably was our sled driver and told us lots of interesting stuff about the elks that I can't even remember now.
Karen and Melody posing on the sleigh just before we enter the elk feeding ground.  Look out elks...here we come!
On last glance back at the elk.  They are really very pretty, and majestic animals.  You would think for a wild animal they would be a little more anxious around people, but they're not.  They couldn't care less if you were there or not.   It's where they eat and that's all they care about!!
Everyone gets loaded into these open air sleighs that are pulled by two horses.  While you take the trip through the feeding grounds, the driver tells you all the history of the preserve.  You can even ask questions.  But do not attempt to touch the elk.  They are wild animals.
The elk are really pretty docile.  This guy even posed for us.  I think you can tell their age by the size of the horns and the number of them.  But I can't remember for sure.  I think this is an older male elk!
There was a line to board the sleighs, and we all know Melody doesn't have the patience to wait in line...so she found a place to play while we waited our turn!  Isn't she cute?
