 “Maple and Acacia”

By Anonymous

Desciption of Submission: A lesbian's veiw of the world and sexuality as realized through the mode of poetry and trees as an extended metaphor.

Separate but close, deep

Darkness enfolds the woods.

Thorny Acacia stands

The world ignores her

Ignores her because she is different

They take sometimes, but do not appreciate her.

She bears no fruit

Maple stands firm

The world notices her beauty

They eat her lifeblood

But they still do not truly see her

She bears no fruit

Acacia and Maple

Standing together long

Both with their uses

Both with their own beauty

Both seeing each other

Many feel that a tree with no fruit

Is useless, is nothing more than wood

If so, why were they born?

Why the Acacia, the Maple, the Birch, the Pine

Trees which bear no fruit

Trees who only have their beauty

Trees waiting for the world to notice

Someday, I hope to find my Acacia

We will live together,

Promised to each other, although not ecclesiastically sanctioned

The world will pass us by

As we recite our promises

Under the Maple

Or the Acacia.
