“I Will Not Change Who I Am”

By Joseph Bernier

Desciption of Submission: A poem descrbing the troubles of gay youth

I will not change who I am

I feel it best for you not to judge.

for this is who I am.

born and raised.

it's true I'm gay.

don't look at me like I'm wrong.

this is normal.

I am normal.

gay is normal.

this is not a choice.

do you think I want

to be ridiculed for who I am.

no.

remarks can be heard

even in the loudest of places.

even with the softest voices.

your remarks hurt.

queer and fag

words hurt.

but I've got words as well.

and they can sting.

my friends.

are what matters.

they like me

for me.

gay or straight.

it doesn't matter.

what matters is

who you are.

I'm me.

I'm gay.

I'm normal.

I will not change who I am.
