 “Love in the U.S.

By Erica Goldman

Desciption of Submission: This poem discusses the issues of defined marriage, religion, and acceptance.

They say that love moves mountains

but it cant move politicians.

Love can take your breath away

but it cant take ignorance away.

Would it really have been better

if I’d never found love?

Is traditional so important

that it makes others think I’m sick?

I tried to do it their way

I tried to be their normal.

I’m content to let them be happy

if they can just let me.

Do I really wreck their marriage,

their life, the world?

Have I really corrupted their children,

their family, their friends?

They say love lifts you up

But it’s not high enough to escape oppression.

Love is beautiful

but not to those who have defined it by marriage.

They teach that I shouldn’t cast a stone

unless I’ve not sinned.

They all have their faults

yet they tell me I’m evil.

They preach about forgiveness

while ranting on how nothing will save my soul.

They teach the importance of acceptance

but refuse to accept me.

What happened to live

and let live?

Why is my love

not as good as theirs?

Where is understanding,

compassion, and acceptance?

Should I really live a life that is fake

just to make them feel better?
