“Do They Know”

By Sala Sataraka - HI

Desciption of Submission: My parents are lesbians.  They've been together for almost 11 years.  I was unaware that I was uncomfortable.  Unlike my older brother, I have felt uncomfortable about my parents being different.  Lately, though, I have finally grown comfortable with my parents.  This comes, I know, from growing more secure with myself, which has helped me to appreciate and love my parents for who they are.  I've been sharing my story at school, much to my parents' surprise.  When I first told my story in a speech class, my mom told me, "You know you're not outing us - you're outing yourself."  She was right.  The more I grow, the more I understand that the only thing that is important for people to know is that we love each other, we support each other, and we share ourselves with the world in a positive and giving manner.” - Sala

Why Karen and Melody Liked It:  We liked how the poem showed Sala’s feelings about her lesbian moms and how she came to embrace it.

Do they know?

Can they see?

Their eyes.

They stare.

I feel them whispering.

I hear them looking.

Hiding for years.

Hiding from them.

From everyone.

My friends

My teachers

My self.

Hiding my mom and

Her lover

We live in the same house

We drive in the same car

They sleep in the same bed

They kiss

They touch

They are the same Sex

Some know

Some guess

Some ignore it

But I know

Now, I want you to know

Don’t guess.

Let me tell you.

Don’t ignore it.

Open your eyes

As I have now

Embrace it

As I have now

Love them for who they are

As I do now

Accept them

As I do now.

Do they know?

Yes.

Now they know.
