Description of Submission: Painting of African-American woman caught between two opposing sides. The American flag being that of tradition and the rainbow being liberalism. She is reflecting on the similarities between this struggle and that of the struggle that was once presented for her people when black was separated from white.
Biography: Rian-Ahslei will be a freshman in Georgia State University. She is looking to major in Journalism and minoring in Spanish. She likes to travel to various Spanish-speaking countries, such as Mexico and Spain. In the future she would like to become a teacher.
Why Karen and Melody Liked It: We enjoyed this painting because it was able to demonstrate how the fight for gay rights is similar to the black community fighting for equal rights. The text surrounding the woman if very poignant: "history has taught us that seperate never means equal". The use of the American Flag and that Gay Pride Flag in the background was nicely done. .Also receiving the original artwork, allowed us to see the vivid colors used in the painting. |
