 “Subhumanity”

By Nickolas McDaniel, CA

Desciption of Submission: Poem detailing my mental struggle with society over my being transsexual.” – Nickolas

The powers that be claim that people—

Like me—

Are wrong.

I am not in most statutes,

No clause to protect me nor my rights,

No wording to grant me equality.

I am an issue or distant cause,

Championed when convenient,

Invisible more often than not.

Rendered a subhuman,

In reality I am anything but.

I still bleed when hurt.

My blood, too, runs red.

I feel just as you do,

But my cries go largely unheard.

I am not a “cause”,

Nor abnormal or subhuman.

I am just a man who once had

The body

Of a woman.
